Farmers Market Friday

Shopping at my local farmer's market each week is an enjoyable, healthy and useful activity. Look at what I bought and what I cooked.

After all,  it's outdoors, everyone wears a mask, and there is plenty of room for social distancing. Most of all I am able to get lots of locally grown organic produce that is flavorful and fresher than the produce that is available in the supermarkets that have been shipped from all over the US and the world.

Most of all of I've enjoyed the abundance of fresh local produce and herbs. There are about 12 farmers that participate and 3 of them are organic produce. In addition, there is a homemade sourdough bread stand that does have a line, and a pickle guy, and a few other people, such as a woman who sells "pretty" masks, two grass fed beef and cheese stands, some local honey, etc.

This week I made a wonderful salad from my haul with dandelion greens, curley lettuce, jumbo radishes, fresh basil, cabbage, fresh dill, and I added some cucumber that I purchased in the supermarket.

Two weeks ago I purchased two jumbo zucchini which I spiralized to make into zucchini noodles. The zucchini made two large containers and they stay fresh for 5-7 days in the refrigerator.

I love to stir-fry some everyday with other veggies or sometimes I stir-fry the zucchini noodles and toss them in this Middle Eastern nut and spice blend called dukkah (link that explains about it).

The winter squash is ansi starting to come in so I bought a large acorn squash and some butternut squash. In addition, I bought some local potatoes which have been delicious and they are perfect for adding to soups. I actually made a  lemony potato and artichoke stew/soup. which is a family favorite that I make with frozen artichoke quarters from Trader Joe's.

Our local farmer's market will be open until Thanksgiving and it's a great outdoor activity that I look forward to each week!

Do you get to go to a local farmer's market?

I made this savory soup in my Instant Pot -

  2. Fresh, local and seasonal are the best! Our local farmer market is really tiny...just a few stalls with limited produce...well, it's better than nothing. Have a great weekend, Judee.

  3. I need to try zucchini noodles as I don't love the gluten free pasta I buy for my husband. I haven't been to a farmer's market this year but have been to our St. Lawrence Market which is open all year. We also have a local market which is the distributor to many restaurants that also has fresh vegetables.

  5. Gorgeous produce! I love going to the farmer's markets too but I admit I haven't been since March or so - I need to start again now that it's warming up here. I love the sound of the lemony artichoke soup too, I need to check out the recipe.

  7. That sounds delicious, judee. Yes, I belong to a co-op up in Wrightwood. Every two weeks we receive a box of produce from the local organic farmers. It's just wonderful. I am going to cook some winter squash for dinner, too.

  8. I have been shopping the local markets as well, and have really gotten into the micro greens. It's nice to be ale to learn and prepare something new.
