If you do, please be aware that on Friday May 31 the Food Safety News reported an outbreak of Hepatitis A that is suspected of being linked to eating organic frozen berries from Costco..
I don't usually post this type of information, but since it was specifically related to organic frozen berries, I thought it was important for my readers who might use these products and were not aware of the news.
When I saw the article, I panicked because I love frozen berries and eat them daily in my oatmeal or a shake
..However, the outbreak seems to be linked to specifically Costco berries.. ( I get mine at Trader Joe's)
I just used frozen berries for my pancake kabobs!!
The article :
"A new outbreak of a hepatitis A strain rarely seen in the Western Hemisphere is believed to be associated with frozen mixed berries purchased from Costco is being investigated by multiple agencies, including the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. At least 30 illnesses are involved, including sicknesses in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. "Read the remainder of the article.
Disclaimer: I know nothing about the website or the article and am not connected in anyway, but thought it was important to pass it on.

It was my first time visiting. There were some great posts.

ReplyDeleteI agree..
DeleteUGH!! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks, yes, I do eat a lot of frozen berries with fresh cream and honey.....
ReplyDeleteI eat them all the time too! Hope that isn't connected to any products here in Oz. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Natasha in Oz
It's too bad that this has to be linked to organic food, but that seems to get the most press. I seem to recall, not that long ago, serious problems with "washed" spinach and salad products that were not organic, but a big deal was not made about the products being from major industrial giants. And ground meat from major industrial meat agencies. And StarLink corn products. But the thing that sticks in consumers' minds is "organic." We live in a mass-producing society, and this is a good reminder that local people, sustainably growing local products, are worth seeking out and supporting. And, if we've got the land, growing a garden and berries of our own.

ReplyDeleteI read about this! Funnily enough, I often wonder about how frozen fruit is picked. I tend to give it a wash under the tap but I'm often uncomfortable about eating frozen fruit uncooked. Did they ever find out why these particular berries were contaminated?
