Sadly, a dear blogging friend, Daniel Saraga from The Haggis and the Herring passed away suddenly on Sept 14, 2012 at age 37 leaving behind his wife Mededith, two young children and a third on the way.
Although I only knew Daniel through blogging, our frequent emails, and his upbeat comments that he left on so many of our blogs, I truly thought of Daniel as a friend. His cheerful disposition and willingness to always lend a hand and advice to help a fellow blogger will not be forgotten. He presence in the blogging community will truly be missed. I know I will miss him, his enthusiasm, and his interesting recipes that he drew from his and his wife's heritages.
Please read his eulogy which he loving wife Meredith wrote and posted on his site.
I knew Daniel from a Yahoo group before I joined the Secret Recipe Club; then it turned out that Daniel was one of my fellow bloggers in Group B in the club. As a tribute to his memory, many of us in the Secret Recipe Club are posting a recipe from Daniel's blog today! You can scroll down and see the links of all the Secret Recipe Club recipe tributes that are all from Daniel's blog.
Daniel, we miss you; may you rest in peace.
Since Daniel recently blogged about one of my salad dressing recipes, cucumber dill , I decided to try one of his salad dressing recipes, strawberry balsamic vinaigrette. It's a simple recipe, but it is full of flavor. It's a perfect dressing for my jicama and mint salad. Dan, I will forever think of you when I make this dressing..

Dan left a long comment on my site the day he died. It was for my Rosh Hashana Post for Gluten Free Matzo Balls -
They look perfect. My sister-in-law makes something similar nowadays. There's just something about matzo ball soup.
Funny tho, I usually associate it with the Manischewitz "Matzo ball and soup" in a box. And we all know that that particular soup has never been anywhere near a chicken!
It's one of the few "packaged" foods that I enjoy, just for the nostalgia.

Real, home made chicken soup with home made matzo balls still win the day, tho.

That dressing sounds delicious, and perfect for your yummy salad. Nice being in SRC with you.
ReplyDeleteIt is a perfect addition to the salad. Daniel had many wonderful recipes
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm starting to tear up again as I look over all of this - I remember so many of these recipes, commenting on them, Dan's responses back. One of them (the cider chicken) is even mine; and I remember his having been so excited when a co-worker gave him a boatload of rhubarb, and I gave him a savory option for using it. Dan enjoyed food so much, from sandwiches to soups to his grandmother's Moroccan dishes, and he gave all of us so much joy as he enthused about them and shared the recipes. Such an unbelievable loss ....
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteSo well said.
What a gorgeous recipe! Wow, so full of flavor. And a beautiful tribute, Judee. Such a terrible loss. We'll all miss Daniel.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful vinaigrette and a wonderful tribute to Daniel
ReplyDeleteLovely post. I will give this a try...and think of Daniel!
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought of a strawberry puree in a salad dressing but strawberries and balsamic vinegar are a classic combo so why not force them to get a little closer? :)
ReplyDeleteHow incredibly sad, but your recipe looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful thoughts, Judee. And how great you got a comment from him the day he passed. I heard from him something silly about a cookie I posted about a week before his passing. Who would ever have known. I'm sure his family wants us to all show our loved ones how much we love them. That is the reminder I take from this.
ReplyDeleteAnd the dressing sounds great!
