Vegetarian Lettuce Wraps -PF Chang's Copy Cat Recipe

Have you ever eaten at PF Chang's?
It is a Chinese restaurant chain that is popular throughout the US. One of the few gluten-free and vegan options on their menu is their vegetarian tofu lettuce wraps which are gluten-free optional (meaning you must request them to be made GF). I really like them and decided to try and make/create something like them at home.

Lettuce wraps are tasty and fun to eat. Serving lettuce wraps is an interactive way to enjoy a meal while saving on calories and carbs. The crisp, cool lettuce acts as a crunchy base, offering a refreshing contrast to the savory plant-based filling. A great option for those looking to lighten up their meals and add more fiber without sacrificing flavor. Serve as  an appetizer for a dinner party or as part of a light meal.
Just another way to incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet!

My tofu filling recipe:

Ingredients tamari sauce, ginger, tofu, scallions
The Hoisin sauce that I bought (at Whole Foods)  is also gluten-free, as is the Tamari sauce.
The Hoisin sauce is optional as a topping

tofu and vegetables in a skillet

Tofu and cabbage slaw mixture

Ingredients
1 block of extra firm tofu, diced into small pieces
1/2 cup of Tamari sauce (or more or less to taste)
2 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger
1 cup of green scallions, sliced
1/2 cup of vegetable broth
1 cup of cabbage cole slaw (from a bag) or shredded cabbage
garlic powder
Hoisin Sauce for a topping- This is a must- tastes amazing

Directions:
Dice the block of tofu into small pieces
Pour Tamari sauce over the tofu and mix well
Set aside
In a large rimmed skillet, add vegetable broth and grated ginger. Turn on the heat, add the tofu mixture, garlic powder, the cabbage slaw, and the scallions. Allow to cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring to prevent sticking and burning. Add a little more broth if needed.

Taste and season with salt and freshly cracked pepper ( or red pepper flakes) to taste

Wash Bibb or Romaine lettuce leaves, add the filling, top with Hoisin sauce and enjoy!

Please note: The filling can be made in advance, but assemble the stuffed leaves just before eating. (everyone can make their own)

My notes:
  • This recipe is oil-free, gluten-free, and vegan.
  • You can make the filling in advance
  • The filling can be served at room temp and each person fill his/her own
  •  Hoisin sauce adds an amazing flavor
  • Enjoy as an appetizer or as an entree with a bowl of soup

    1. Tofu is a great protein for vegans. You do have to develop a taste for it!

  8. Thisa sounds and looks wonderful. I watch my sodium so might not use these particular kinds of tamari and hoisin sauce. Saw it at #SSPS348. My shares are #57 thru 61 (something for everyone). Enjoy and be well.

    1. Thanks Nancy- They are higher in sodium but there are products that would work that are lower in sodium.

    1. It is a great summer meal. I live in Florida for the winter so our temps are comfortable in February. At home in Pennsylvania my family is complaining about the extreme cold.I forget that in Australia you are in your hottest months. Lettuce wraps might be perfect.

  10. We made something like this recently… a neat idea. Lettuce makes a great wrapper and it’s crunchier than regular wonton skins. I just read a long article about P.F.Chang’s — I think I’ve only eaten there once. I prefer the quirky mom-and-pop Asian restaurants.
